The first line number.

Add line numbers

Add a number to every line with live output. Choose a starting value, step, optional zero-padding, and the exact prefix, separator, and suffix around each number.

Empty lines and safe removal

Blank lines remain in place. You can choose whether they consume a number. Remove mode recognizes common, anchored formats and also reverses the current custom format, so ordinary numeric content such as dates and addresses is left alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can numbering start at 0?

Yes. Any finite integer, including zero or a negative value, can be the starting number.

Can I increment by 5 or 10?

Yes. Set Step to any non-zero whole number.

Can I number blank lines?

Yes. Number empty lines is on by default, and can be turned off without removing those lines.

Can I remove line numbers again?

Yes. Remove mode handles common dot, parenthesis, and colon formats plus the current custom format.

Will it remove numbers that are part of my text?

It only removes unambiguous number markers at a line start, such as 1. followed by whitespace or the end of the line.

When to use it

Use it to label excerpts for review, troubleshooting, or discussion, then remove those labels again when they are no longer needed.

Three steps

  1. Paste the lines to number or unnumber.
  2. Set the start number, increment, separator, and empty-line behavior.
  3. Review the output before copying it into an email, issue, or document.

Example and a common mistake

Start at 10 with an increment of 10 to produce 10: first item, 20: second item.

Removal relies on the selected number format; arbitrary digits at the start of a real line should not be treated as generated labels.
